In 2019, Kassie, Wendy, and I started a group that became fondly known as Wine & Writing. It was a space for us to share and grow and just enjoy the craft. Caleb joined after a couple of years, and then Emily. Once a month for 7 (!) years now, we have met over wine and vegan baked goods to read each other’s work, to brainstorm, to encourage.
Then came that fateful night in 2025. “Wouldn’t it be cool to have a place to publish all of our little random things that don’t fit in anywhere else?” Kassie and I locked eyes. Were we joking? No, we absolutely weren’t. Thus, the idea of Misfit Magpie was hatched.
It has taken over a year to get to this point. All of us have put in so much work preparing the website and social media accounts; figuring out the legal and financial things; writing guidelines and checklists; designing and deciding and dreaming. I’m proud of everything we’ve done, and I hope that you, our readers, can see the care and thought that have gone into this endeavor.
Our Mission Statement is: Celebrating purely human weirdness through a random, chaotic assortment of creative pieces. We believe in the limitless creativity of the human spirit. AI can never do what we do – it can only regurgitate lesser copies. We aren’t perfect, but we will do our best to make sure that every piece we select for publication is solely human in origin.
We will open for submissions on November 1st and publish two pieces in January 2027. Until then, grab a glass of wine and polish up your best bit of chaotic human weirdness. Who knows? You might be the first egg in Pharaoh’s nest.
