Our Villain Origin Story
Misfit Magpie was started in 2025 when one friend joked about starting a publishing company and another friend locked eyes with her and they were like…but what if we did? The other members of the writing group immediately jumped on board, and thus a weird, misshapen magpie was born.

Pharaoh the Magpie
Pharaoh came to us in a very roundabout way. It started with American Pharaoh, a thoroughbred racehorse who won the American Triple Crown and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2015. This beautiful horse was painted on a wine glass given to one of our editors at a work event. It became known as the “horse cup” at writing group, and he or she who ended up with the horse cup had to present their work first. When we were brainstorming a name for our magpie mascot, we knew we had to keep Pharaoh in the family.
